Expository Preaching in it's simplest form is giving people the Bible in preaching. It is exposing people to the contents of scripture through a consistent method of working through passages in which the points of the sermon are based on the text. Background study, cross reference, contextualization as well as language studies are used to expose the scripture to people. The most common method of exposition on a long term basis is to preach through books of the Bible. The method let's God's Word speak to people through the explanation of the preacher.

George Whitefield made his 5th visit to America in 1754. War was brewing between France and England. The French and Indian war was on the horizon that would persist for seven years. Whitefield knew he would be restricted from travel if war broke out so he went to America with all haste.

1742 marked one of the biggest years in the expansion of Whitefield's ministry. From his home base in London and particular the future Tabernacle area he felt led to venture out to the area of Moorfields which was one of the roughest places in London. He had preached there some before his trip to America in 1740 but it was not a sustained effort. Now, he decided to go with fellow exhorters and prayer partners to preach in the difficult and if not at times very immoral place.

The Great Awakening and the two great leaders did have critics. Those who favored a middle course for the awakening were called "New Lights". Some opposed the excess emotionalism in the Great Awakening. They became known as the "Old Lights." Among the Presbyterians the schism was called the Old Side and the New Side.
